A Narrow Boat Holiday

Recently, a myself and two of my brothers decided on a weekends holiday on the Grand Union Canal or Brothers behaving badly as my wife christened it. We took my brothers narrow boat The Narrow Escape and headed from Aylesbury to Hemel Hempstead and back. This was one of the most enjoyable holidays I have had. The ability to travel slowly along quiet waterways, full of fish and wildlife, with herons sitting like sentinels every few hundred yards and even Kingfishers were to be seen as they hunted the fish in the canal. It helps that the three of us share a love of nature, good beer and have a common sense of humour. Navigating the locks was always fun and my brother Norman seemed to be able to travel back and forwards across the canal instead of in a straight line and was soon nicknamed, Captain Zigzag (and that was before we had a drink).

All along the route there were pubs and restaurants that catered for the passing traffic, many serving ales that I had never heard of before. To be able to travel a few miles, sit outside an old English pub in the sunshine, with a pint of real ale and ploughmans lunch, in good company is my idea of heaven. And then back on the boat and chug down the canal until it was time for another beer. In the evening we would moor at one of the many mooring points along the bank, most with watering facilities and then head off into a sleepy village to explore the available pubs and restaurants. At the end of the weekend my sides were aching, we had laughed that much and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves

The boat was equipped with everything you could wish for and the idea that a narrow boat is necessarily a rough and ready form of accommodation is way off the mark. OK my brothers boat is a bit of a wreck but there were narrow boats on the canal that were like a floating 5 star hotel, with double bedrooms and on-board Jacuzzis, satellite TV and broadband. If you want something a little different and the freedom to travel where you want, at a pace that suits you, go for a narrow boat holiday. You wont regret it.

North Carolina is in My Mind – and for a Good Reason

North Carolina is one of those places that hasn’t yet been destroyed by overpopulation and change that has “adapted” so many states in the last few years. A visit to North Carolina will reveal rolling mountains, long natural beaches, miles of farmland, and some of the best communities in the nation. North Carolina tourism is booming, but not in such a way that takes away from it slow paced appeal. If you are looking for someplace special for vacation North Carolina is your place.

In the western mountains of North Carolina sits Asheville. The city of Asheville is a surprise to first time visitors. As they drive in they expect to find a cheesy tourist trap but instead are delighted to find a hip artist town with one of a kind restaurants, unique shops, galleries, museums, and old homes. Asheville is a walking town that is best seen on foot. Of course Asheville also has that little house known as Biltmore that is the main attraction. Just don’t forget to leave time for the town and the beautiful mountains surrounding Asheville.

Just outside of Asheville is the Blue Ridge Parkway. If you like to see the world from your car this is your road. The Blue Ridge Parkway meanders through the mountains for almost five hundred miles and connects to Asheville in several convenient locations. The Blue Ridge Parkway is in itself a trip worth taking.

On the other side of the state of North Carolina you’ll find the Outer Banks. The Outer Banks are miles and miles of natural beaches with a few small communities dropped in to make it interesting. While in the Outer Banks make sure to check out the lighthouses. The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is a real treat to see. You can climb the stairs to over 200 hundred feet to get a premium view of the area. Other popular lighthouses are the Bodie Island Lighthouse and the Ocracoke Lighthouse on the Ocracoke Island.

Whatever you are looking for North Carolina has it, from hiking and camping in the summer to skiing in the winter. You can golf, fish, hunt, or just take your time and wander around this magical state. North Carolina is a special place and after a visit it will be in your mind as well.

For so long, the only places lesbians could meet publicly was in coffee houses and bars. Now, as the visibility of the lesbian and gay community increases, we thankfully have other options for meeting women who want to date other women.

There are a growing number of organizations that cater to diverse interest groups in the lesbian community. There is an ever expanding list of activities based on shared interests in sports, spirituality, dining, conversation, community service, politics, ethnicity, entertainment, geography, age, career affiliation and more. They range in expense from free to outrageous, and they are all over town!

Now to the real question: How do you know if someone is right for you? That takes time, which is often not an investment folks are willing to make in determining if someone is material for friendship, dating, commitment, or none of the above. Do you know what qualities are important to you in your friends and lovers? It’s okay to write them down and review the list from time to time. Know which traits are negotiable and which ones are drop dead required.

There’s no official list of “girlfriend qualities”, so you really have to search your heart for what you find meaningful and engaging in your relationships with others. When you’ve got a good, solid, but hopefully not too long list of attributes you want your partner to have, take a careful look at yourself. Your First Windsurfing Experience

Before you can be an expert at anything, you have to make a fool out of yourself while you learn the basics. This is particularly true with windsurfing.

It is a fact of any sport. Everyone is a beginner at the beginning regardless of how skilled they may become in time. Windsurfing for beginners requires fairly good physical condition. Outside of that, the rest can be easily learned. Like many sports, it is a good idea to start slow until you gain a little bit of expertise. A river or lake is sometimes a better place to learn, but if you are going to start right in the ocean, it is best to do so in a wind that is blowing inshore and less than 12 knots.

The problem with an offshore wind is that if you get into any trouble, the offshore wind will blow you further out to sea. A beginner is well advised to use the buddy system. If you do not have another windsurfer to go out on the water with you, at least have a buddy on shore who is keeping an eye on you at all times. A personal flotation device should be standard equipment for a beginner also. The learning process is a time to be extremely safety orientated. This will not only help during the awkward time at first, but establish safety habits for the future.

A basic understanding of the standard parts of a windsurfing rig is essential for the beginner. Of course, the first item is the board itself. The boards should have a fin in the back for steering. It should also be able to support your weight. It is a good idea to test this in shallow water. The next most important item is the sail. It is what will provide your propulsion through the water. Sails vary in size, but beginners should use smaller sails at first. Women should use even smaller ones. The boom is the harness that you use to control the direction of the sail. The mast is what the said mounts to and the mast base is a swivel joint where the mast attaches to the board allowing it to move freely.

When you have your windsurfing board properly assembled, you should enter the water with the sail lowered. Balance on the board with your feet shoulder width apart for about five minutes gently rocking back and forth. This should establish your ability to maintain your balance on the board. When you are sure of you balance, slowly lift the sail. Make sure that you retain a proper stance while lifting the sail as it will catch the wind as soon as it is up.

Windsurfing can be a sport that requires a great deal of skill at the advanced and competitive level. However, it is also relatively easy for a beginner to master. If it possible to take a class from a qualified instructor, you should be up and sailing within a couple of hours at most. If you are mastering it on your own, do not forget to use a smaller said at first and begin in a period of low wind velocity.

Like for example, there was this one time, I met up with this lady whom I got to know from a party.

It was all polite at first, but as minutes passed, we found ourselves opening up and inching towards each other.

Experience an Exotic Sea Spot – Agadir Morocco

When you are looking for a great spot to visit in Morocco, you can not go wrong with Agadir. This is a city that is near Inezagane and Ait Melloul. It has a small population of only 200,000, but it makes up for that with how much fun it is to visit this area. When you are looking for a place that can offer you the best beaches, as well as the best sea food, in the world then you have to head over to Agadir. Because of the great atmosphere in this town, people have chosen this spot to be their Morocco travel spot.

One of the best times to go to Agadir is during the winter when the temperature is around 68 degrees. However, no matter what time of the year you head down here, you are going to find that the beaches are full of nice white sand. Not only that, but because the weather stays so warm all the time, the water in this area stays pretty warm as well. In fact, this is an area that is called “winter sun,” and has become a major tourist spot. However, beaches are not the only thing that makes this area very pretty. This area is not only located right on the Atlantic Ocean shore line, but right at the foot of the Atlas Mountains. Also, just to the north of the town is the Souss river that flows right into the ocean. This is one town that truly is full of nature.

If there is one thing this area is known for it’s fish. If you love sea food, then this is the area for you. You are not going to find better sea food anywhere else in the world. They have tons of hotels and cafés all over the area that sell this amazing fish, and it’s well worth a bite. However, if food is not something that turns you on to an area, then you are in luck, because there are a lot more things to see and do in this town.

After you are done stuffing your face with fish, it’s time to hit up one of the many museums they have here. You could start out by hitting the Musee Bert Flint or the Le Musse des Arts Bereres. After that, you can swing over to the Le Sicilien Coco Polizzi, and then to the Musee de Talborjt. They have so many different museums to see in just this one area that you are going to have to spend just a few days doing nothing except museums. These are places that the whole family is going to love to visit. However, you should also keep in mind that this town is a perfect place to take a loved one on a romantic vacation as well. There are tons of places in Morocco that are worth going to, but if you can only choose one, this should be the area you choose to go to. You are going to find everything that you need to make sure you have a great and relaxing vacation, and you really can not ask for anything else.

While I can’t say I share Anthony Bourdain’s disdain
for Rachel Ray, I wince every time I see her leave a
pittance of a tip in one of her $40 a Day shows.

Why?

Because if you are trying to get the most for your
hard earned cash when traveling, the last thing
your need is to become known as a miserly tipper!

Waiters, waitresses, bartenders, bellman… People
in the service industry of all sorts are some of the
hardest working folk out there. That said, they are
also nothing if not human.

How does that come into it?

Let’s start with those in the food service industry.
Generally speaking, these individuals are allowed
a certain amount of leeway in the distribution of
complimentary drinks, desserts, appetizers and
the like. Who do you think gets those?

The 10%ers?

Or that guy that can always be counted on to show
his appreciation both verbally and monetarily each
and every time he visits?

The tipper wins every time…

Now let’s consider hotel staffers.

If you travel as much as I do, or even close to as
much as you would like to, then you know that
you regularly need favors from housekeeping,
room service, concierge services, bellman and
even sometimes management.

I can honestly say that I have more than recouped
every dollar of gratuity in dry cleaning, tickets,
complimentary taxi services and a hundred other
last minute or emergency situations where these
people absolutely could not wait to be of service.

The plain truth of the matter is that when you
show people that you value and respect them
and the services that they provide you with, it
is a win-win-win situation.

Your trip is enhanced by improved service as well
as more pleasant interpersonal interaction.

Your wallet is happy when you get complimentary
food, drinks and a host of other services.

Tips show that you appreciate a job well done.

Tips back up your words of appreciation.

Tips allow you to develop relationships that
will fix problems that you simply cannot predict.

Tips are your best travel value.
